From Ometepe to Pie de Gigante
par Antoine 24 juillet 2010 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Here I am in Nicaragua, really different from Costa Rica. No more big trucks on the road (or less, at least) here the common transports are bicycle, byci-cab, motorbike or carts, which seems very popular. No street dogs in villages, but they’re replaced by pork hanging around the houses, or even sometimes attached with a leash to a tree…
People’s behavior is as well totally different, no more mocking laughs of Costa Rica. Here there are smiling and greetings at every corner.
First stop, Ometepe island:
This one is made by two volcanoes, I meet here Laeticia, met at the Costa Rica/Nicaragua border the day before. Passing through the so many advising of taking a guide to access the volcanoes, we’ll do without
The volcanoes are separated by only few kilometers but they’re really different, one is an active one (but not awaken) and the other is not. So the fauna and flora is evoluting in much more different way.
A lot of petroglyphs sites are also present on the island. Those mysterious symbols, graved on the stone (volcanic) more than 1500years ago.
Second stop, Playa Pie de Gigante (giant foot beach), a small fishermen village lost on the acific coast. I leave there at Jhon’s house, met by warmshowers (same as couchSurfing but for cyclists).
John owns a restaurant on the beach, very relaxed place and all the staff is sympatic. I’m here more to relax than to visit, but still the place is wonderful.
